2020 Nostalgia: Projects We Loved

Year after year, we work tirelessly to evolve our capabilities as a creative partner — from 3D designs to incorporating new production techniques. This year, innovating during COVID and setting a new bar for sustainability were two of our main focuses. And while our team researched and developed new ways to tackle the pandemic and sustainability, we continued building upon existing relationships to refine our processes and deliver the best possible concepts, designs, and products to all of our clients.

Milk Bar Merchandise

Our relationship with Milk Bar is one of our longest-standing partnerships. Year after year, we continue to build on this relationship by designing and conceiving innovative products that bring their cult brand to life across events and store openings. We simultaneously restock many Milk Bar retail products that have become classics that consistently sell out. One of our favorite custom pieces, a repurposed Lady Liberty visual-turned giant neon sign, became a visual staple in Milk Bar stores.

Carnival Cruises Players Club Gift Set

Carnival Cruises initially tasked us with designing a collection that would freshen up the existing inventory within retail stores across all their major cruise ships. This project’s success expanded our partnership to include Carnival Casinos and the Carnival Players Club, where we had the opportunity to produce gifts for their casino loyalty program. We created luxe player gift sets complete with branded cards, dice, poker chips, and much more. All artwork featured custom illustrations developed exclusively for Carnival by the H+S Creative Team for a one-of-a-kind feel.

Lancôme Juicy Tubes Mailer

One of our favorite areas of continued innovation is Influencer Mailers. Influencer marketing is a relatively new (and, for the right brand, highly effective) awareness strategy. The bar for cool, new mailers that showcase products in unique ways continues to rise. Luckily, our creative and production teams’ collaboration allows us to seamlessly execute next-generation mailers that effectively uplift the product and elevate the brand’s core tenants. Our Juicy Tubes mailer was a perfect example of this.

Lancôme wanted to reintroduce their iconic Juicy Tubes lip gloss, initially launched in 2000. To play on the nostalgia of the early 2000s, we developed a zip-around bag that resembled a CD case, complete with an acrylic insert that looked like a CD to list all 20 shades stylized to look like song titles. The compact mailer held all 20 lip glosses of the Juicy Tube launch and elicited an emotional connection with the recipient in celebration of one of Lancôme’s most iconic products.

Kiehl’s Anti-Aging Cream Mailer

Another trend we’ve been employing for Influencer Mailers is perfecting the balance between minimizing waste and magnifying impact. As mentioned in our Sustainability article, we’ve expanded our efforts to source new methods and materials for mailers and packaging. Our mailer for the launch of Kiehl’s Super Multi-Corrective Anti-Aging Cream was 100% recyclable without sacrificing design, feel, or first-impression. Our team also created all the graphics included within the box, making the experience even more ownable and unique for Kiehl’s.

Custom Twitter Bomber

In the last year, apparel has become a massive focus for us at Harper+Scott. In addition to custom-designed retail collections complete with high-quality garments and accessories, we also work with clients to produce one-off items that resonate with their target audience and align with their brand. Earlier this year, Twitter wanted to create a high-end apparel piece for one of their teams working an event. Twitter is a trailblazer in the technology space, and we wanted to make sure the item we produced reflected a high-end and trendy aesthetic reflective of their innovative brand. With that said, we decided on a luxe bomber with custom embroidery, personalized with each recipient’s Twitter handle. The custom gift elicited a very positive response from Twitter’s employees and attendees of the event, who were equally impressed with the quality and level of customization provided.
